What should you review in your water treatment programme?

If you manage a building or several sites, can you easily explain what your water treatment programme covers, what the latest results show and whether any actions remain outstanding?

These are useful questions to ask when reviewing your current arrangements, taking responsibility for a new site or preparing for a discussion with your service provider.

At Evolution Water Services, we support facilities management, maintenance and building services teams with specialist advice and practical services. Here are five areas to include in your next review.

1. Be clear about the systems covered

Start with a simple question: which systems are included in your current service agreement?

Check the scope against the equipment at your site. Make a note of any installations, replacements or changes in use since the agreement was last reviewed.

This gives you a useful starting point for a conversation with your provider. It also helps you identify where you need more information, particularly if you have inherited responsibility for a building with incomplete records.

2. Ask what the testing is intended to tell you

A report should help you understand your system, rather than simply add another document to your records.

Ask your provider to explain:

• Why the particular tests have been selected.

• What the results indicate.

• Whether there are changes compared with previous results.

• What further investigation or action is recommended.

Evolution's laboratory services include support with interpreting results and advice on what to do next.

3. Follow recommendations through to completion

When reviewing reports, look beyond whether the service visit took place.

Check whether recommendations have been assigned to someone, whether the work has been completed and whether any follow-up is still needed. A straightforward action record can help your facilities team and service provider keep track of progress.

It is also useful to ask whether a recurring issue needs a wider discussion. Repeated recommendations may indicate that a practical obstacle, such as access, responsibility or budget, needs resolving.

4. Consider the equipment supporting your programme

Include your water treatment equipment in the discussion.

Do you know who is responsible for its servicing and maintenance? Are there outstanding recommendations? Has your site's equipment changed since the treatment arrangements were agreed?

Evolution's plant equipment team can support water softeners, water conditioning plant, dosing and control equipment, reverse osmosis equipment and chlorine dioxide installations.

Bringing equipment requirements into the review helps you build a fuller picture of the support your site needs.

5. Make responsibilities and contact routes clear

A programme is easier to manage when everyone understands their role.

Confirm who receives reports, who reviews recommendations and who authorises work. Make sure colleagues know where to find the relevant records and who to contact if they have concerns.

Where your responsibilities also include water hygiene, review how this is managed alongside your treatment arrangements. Our water hygiene services provide tailored support for managing Legionella and other microbiological risks.

Start your review with a clear picture

Before speaking to your provider, gather your service agreement, recent reports, outstanding recommendations and details of any changes at the site.

You do not need to have every answer. Identifying the questions is a useful first step towards understanding your current arrangements and where additional support may be needed.

Evolution Water Services provides water treatment services and related support for organisations across the UK.
